Dr. Marion Lawrence Crawford

Dr. Marion Lawrence Crawford, 84, of Marion, died Aug. 2, 2004. He was born at Morgan Springs on Feb. 3, 1920, to Roy Judson Crawford and Margaret “Maggie” Christenberry Crawford.

He attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University), graduating as a doctor of veterinary medicine in 1942. While at Auburn, he was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho agricultural fraternity. Following his graduation, he practiced veterinary medicine for several year sin Lake Charles, La., and Mobile before returning in 1946 to Perry County, where he continued a veterinary practice that spanned 34 years and resumed active management of his cattle and timber operations in west central Alabama.

He served in numerous leadership roles in veterinary and livestock organizations, including serving as president of both the Alabama Veterinary Medical Association and the Alabama Angus Association. He was a lifetime director and honorary vice-president of the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association and was a lifetime alumni director of Xi Chapter, Alpha Gamma Rho, whose recreation building is dedicated in his honor. His efforts to improve the status of Alabama’s livestock industry were recognized by his election to the Alabama Livestock Hall of Fame. He was also elected to the Alabama Agriculture Hall of Honor, awarded the T. Whit They, Jr., Memorial Leadership Award, and selected as one of Alpha Gamma Rio’s Brothers of the Century, recognizing the “best of the beset” of members in the fraternity’s first 100 years. He was a member of Marion United Methodist Church, which he served for many years as a lay delegate to the annual conference and in other capacities.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Gloria Huey Crawford; a son, George Lawrence Crawford, both of Marion; a daughter Shirley Crawford Borough and husband Judge Richard Borough; granddaughter, Carolyn Elizabeth Borough East and husband Christopher Ryan East; grandson, Bernell Lawrence Dorrough; great-granddaughter, Catherine Crawford East, all of Montgomery; brother, David Lamar Crawford, Marion Junction.

Funeral services will be Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at the Marion United Methodist Church with the Rev. James L. Waters Jr. and Dr. Larry Teasley officiating. Burial will follow in the New Live Oak Cemetery, Selma. The family will receive friends Thursday at the Chapel of Marion United Methodist Church one hour prior to the service.

Active pallbearers are Laird Love, Michael Davis, William A. McCurdy, John Roy Barnes, William E. Powell IV, Dr. Bruce Hurchinson, John Cecil Crawford and William P. Guerard III.

Honorary pallbearers are Bill Kendricks, Kirtley W. Brown, Ronald L. Robertson, Dr. Doug Hallbrooks, Max Eiland Jr., Roy J. Crawford, Dr. Lewis Hall McCurdy, David McCurdy, James M. Barnes, Jr., Dr. Billy Powell, and Dr. Donald M. Russell Jr.

Ollie B. Pittman

Linden

Ollie B. Pittman, 84, of Linden, died Aug. 1, 2004 at Marengo Nursing Home. Graveside services will be Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2004 at 11 a.m. at Riverdale Cemetery in Columbus, Ga., with the Rev. Charles Langford officiating.

Mrs. Pittman was preceded in death by her husbands, Hercules G. Spahos and Cecil Pittman. She is survived by a son, Braxton (Barbara) Spahos of Demopolis and a grandson, Nicholas Spahos of Auburn.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the United Methodist Children’s Home in Selma or Trinity United Methodist Church in Phenix City.

Mr. Robert Brown, 39, of Demopolis died recently at Baptist-Princeton Medical Center in Birmingham. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at 1 p.m. at the Saints Tabernacle Church of God In Christ in Demopolis. Elder Frank Stiff will officiate. Burial will follow in Memorial Cemetery in Demopolis. The body will be at the church Saturday at noon. Larkin and Scott Funeral Directors of Demopolis are in charge of arrangements.

Cleveland, Ohio

Mrs. Willie Purse, 82, of Cleveland, Ohio, formerly of Demopolis, died recently in Cleveland, Ohio. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004 at 2 p.m. at the Greater New Hope Baptist Church in Demopolis. The Rev. Wilson Crum is pastor. The Rev. Alex Reese will officiate. Burial will follow in Memorial Cemetery in Demopolis. The body will be at the church Saturday at 1 p.m. Larkin and Scott Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Regina Compton, 93, f Linden, died July 30, 2004, at Bryan Whitfield Hospital. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004 at 1 a.m. at Larkin and Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Demopolis. The Rev. Alfred Hudson will officiate. Burial will follow in Jones Cemetery in Demopolis. She is survived by a daughter, Nettie Jones-Mack (Willie) of Linden; a son, Robert Jones and a host of siblings preceded her in death; one sister, Sarah Balford of Mobile; a host of devoted grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and descendants of Mr. Bennie Jones, and a devoted family friend, Mrs. Ora D. Owens of Demopolis.

Mrs. Lucinda Carter, 95, of Demopolis died recently at Bryan Whitfield Hospital. Larkin and Scott Funeral Directors will announce memorial services later. She is survived by two devoted nieces, Emma Morris and Rosia Daniels of Demopolis. Larkin and Scott Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.

Livingston

Mrs. Ora Cook, 62, of Livingston died July 14, 2004 at Jeff Anderson Medical Center in Meridian. Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 21, 2004 at 3 p.m. at Morning Star Baptist Church in Livingston. The Rev. Dr. F.N. Nixon officiated. Burial was at Dugg Hill Cemetery in Coatopa.
