DAYTON — A stationary trailer parked along a twisting road didn’t remain stationary for long late Thursday night.

A logging-truck trailer — without the truck — tumbled onto County Road 39 near Dayton, filling the roadway with cut logs and catching at least one traveler by surprise.

Around 9:30 p.m. Thursday, four members of the Marengo County Fire and Rescue Squad, the Thomaston Volunteer Fire Department, Alabama State Troopers and EMS personnel were called to a wreck involving an 18-wheeler.

“When that happens, we immediately call for a fire truck to respond because there’s usually diesel fuel involved,” said Denny Baynham, a member of the Marengo County Fire and Rescue Squad.

In this case, there was no diesel fuel because there was no tractor hitched to the trailer.

“Somebody left the trailer there with the logs on it, and the landing gear — near the fifth wheel — was in the ground,” Baynham explained. “We think that caused a sink hole and the truck fell over into the road.”

Baynham confirmed that Robert Hinton, driving a smaller truck with his sons, was taken to the hospital Thursday night. A spokesman at Bryan Whitfield Memorial Hospital confirmed that Hinton was admitted.

“Mr. Hinton was treated and released,” said Danny Smith with BWWMH.

Baynham also said at least one of Hinton’s sons — a juvenile — was also taken to the hospital for observation, though the injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Though The Times could not confirm the owner of the trailer, Baynham said it belongs to English Office, who works in the area. The log trailer had a 15 tag, which is the tag prefix for Choctaw County.

“I took a look at the permit, and English’s name was on it,” Baynham said. “It also said the logs belonged to Bagwell Logging.”

After arriving at the scene, Baynham said it took emergency personnel until 12:30 a.m. on Friday to clear the roadway.
