It’s been three years since Americans watched in horror as the twin towers and the Pentagon were demolished by suicide pilots. Now, on the anniversary of that fateful day, Demopolis and surrounding areas will honor and remember those who died and the acts that brought this nation together.

Mike Grayson’s campaign is holding a special memorial event in front of Wal-Mart today beginning at 11 a.m.

“We Remember 9-11” is meant to honor the fallen military soldiers, police and firefighters who have died in an effort to protect this country and those who continue to serve to protect this country’s freedom.

Earlier in the morning, the Alabama Rural Heritage Foundation and Woodmen of the World will hold a flag and pole dedication. The service will begin at 8:30 a.m. in Thomaston. The ceremony will be held at the Heritage’s Center Freedom Garden, which was dedicated in 2002 in memory of those 9-11 victims.

The United States flag and flag pole have been donated to Thomaston’s Freedom Garden by Woodmen of the World as part of a national effort to honor the heroes and victims of September 11, 2001,and to recognize the members of this community who help ensure residents’ safety each day.

A short patriotic service will be held at the Garden, which is located on the old Marengo County High School football field, directly behind the Heritage Center. Demopolis High School ROTC Color Guard will present the colors.

Others helping to commemorate the dedication include Thomaston’s WEBELOS Pack 49, Thomaston Volunteer Fire Department, Woodmen Representative Bob Drury, and Mayor Terry Counselman.

Marilyn Daniels, Chairman of the Heritage Center’s Board of Directors said she wanted to encourage friends and neighbors to be present for this event.

“If you would like to bring a flower from your own garden to share for planting in the Freedom Garden, donations are always accepted,” she said.
