Helen Beatrice Elam Jones

Helen Beatrice Elam Jones, a resident of Greensboro for over half a century, died at Colonial Haven Rest&Rehabilitation Center on Wednesday, September 29, 2004, following a three decade battle with rheumatoid arthritis and the loss of her husband of 58 years in June of this year.

Although she was born in Laurel, MS, on New Year’s Day, 1919, Mrs. Rhodes went as an infant to Winston County, AL where she grew up.

Following graduation from high school, she lived in California for a time before returning to Alabama, attending business school and working at the Alabama Girls’ Industrial School in Birmingham.

Mrs. Rhodes attended Alabama College at Montevallo for one year.

In 1946, she married John James Rhodes, late of Greensboro.

Mrs. Rhodes cheerfully devoted the rest of her life to creating and nurturing a close knit, self sufficient, happy and loving family.

She was an accomplished seamstress, an avid gardener, a serious bird lover and a celebrated cook and hostess.

“Miss Helen’s” life embodied the terms wife, mother and friend.

Survivors include her children, Cheryl R. West of Hoover, John J. (Jack) Rhodes of Newbern, Joyce R. Adams (Dick) of Winter Garden, FL., Robert E. (Bob) Rhodes (Arlene) of Havana and Myrial B. Morrison of Sawyerville.

She is also survived by her grandchildren, Amy E. West (Barney Peterson) of Minneapolis, MN, April E. Surprenant (Michael) of New York, NY, William R. Adams of London, England, and Benjamin R. Rhodes (Crystal) of Moundville, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, the TEL Sunday school class and special friends, Ruby Arrington, Eva Johnston, and Mary Lou May.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 1, 2004 at the Greensboro Baptist Church followed by interment at Oakwood Cemetery in Greensboro with the Rev. Dee McGuire and Dr. Denton Goodwin officiating.

The family received friends at the church one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Arthritis National Research Foundation, 200 Oceangate, Suite 830, Long Beach, CA 90802, Hospice of West Alabama, 1800 McFarland Blvd, Suite 310, Tuscaloosa, AL 35401 or the Greensboro Baptist Church Building Fund, 908 Main Street, Greensboro, AL.

Pallbearers were Leland Avery, Mickey Harrow, Al Hill, Mark Long, Floye Meigs, and Jimmy Payne.

Elaine Burroughs Hayles

Graveside services for Mrs. Elaine Burroughs Hayles, age 73 of Eutaw, AL were held at

2:00 p.m., Monday, October 4, 2004 at Beulah Baptist Cemetery, Route 3, Eutaw, AL with Rev. Bennie Hayes officiating.

The family will receive friends Sunday, October 3, 2004 at Kidd-Robbins Funeral Directors from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Mrs. Hayles died Friday, October 1, 2004 at her residence.

She is survived by four sisters, Nita Henderson, Mae Killingsworth,&Libby Canady, all of Eutaw, Annie Ruth Overby of Edgemoor, S.C., four brothers, Judd Burroughs of Pineapple, AL, William Burroughs of Pensacola, FL, James “Rev” Burroughs of Eutaw, AL, and John Burroughs of Buhl, AL.

Mrs. Hayles was a native of Buhl, AL and a resident of Eutaw since 1996.

Mrs. Hayles was a retired math teacher from the Mobile, AL city school systems and had taught in Selma, AL and Cantonement, FL.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Hayles.

Wanda Gail Swindal Lewis

Gallion

Graveside services for Mrs. Wanda Gail Swindal Lewis, age 52 of Gallion, AL will be at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 5, 2004 at Payne’s Chapel Cemetery, Sprott, AL with Calvin Strickland officiating.

Mrs. Lewis died at her residence on Sunday, October 3, 2004 after an extended illness.

Survivors include her husband, Adam (Michelle) Lewis of Five Points, AL, his mother, Verna (Calvin) Riley Swindal Strickland of Selma, AL, one sister, Linda (Charles) Roberts Swindal of Selma, AL, one brother, Tommy (Lynn) of Selma, AL, grandchildren,

Beth&Neal Smith, Jordan, Nicole,&Kelsie Barrett, Kacey&Morgan Barrett, Shelby Lewis, and a special Godchild, Anna-Coleman.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Smith, Norwood Smith, Sam Roberts, Royce Riley Jr., George Riley, and James Lane.

Joe Browder

Livingston

Graveside services for Joe Browder will be held on Tuesday, October 5, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. at Hennigan Cemetery, with Rev. Grant Parker officiating.

Burial will be in Hennigan Cemetery with Bumpers Funeral Home of York, AL.

Mr. Browder, age 58 of Livingston, AL died Sunday, October 3, 2004 at York, AL at Hill Hospital.

He was owner of Joe’s Ark in Epes, AL.

Mr. Browder is survived by his wife, Linda Nixon Browder of Livingston, AL, two sons, Joey Browder of Livingston, AL&Nicky Browder of Moundville, AL, one daughter, Carla Durret of Eutaw, AL, one brother, Woody Browder of Tuscaloosa, AL, and five grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Monday, October 3, 2004 from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the family residence, 113 Magnolia, St. Livingston, AL.

Cubia James

Demopolis

Mr. Cubia James, age 82 of Demopolis, AL passed October 1, 2004 at Fairview Nursing Home, Birmingham, AL.

Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, October 6, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Demopolis, AL with Rev. Moses Jones Sr. officiating.
