George Price Tillery

George Price Tillery, owner/manager of Price-Tillery Furniture Company, long-time land, timber and cattle farmer died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004 at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center in Meridian, Miss.

Funeral services for Mr. Tillery will be Friday, Oct. 8, 2004 at 3 p.m. at York Baptist Church with the Revs. Johnny Walker, David Wilkinson and William Yount officiating. Burial will follow in York Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until funeral time at the church.

Mr. Tillery was 55. In the face of his debilitating illness, he showed great courage and faith and was an encouragement and inspiration to those around him. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend; dearly loved by the entire community and openly returned that love. He was a member of the York Rotary Club, York City Council, Sumter County Industrial Board, Soil Conservation Board, and faithful to Covenant Presbyterian Church, although his membership was still held by York Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife Traci Jean Tillery of York, one daughter, Jennifer Tillery (Norman Thomas) Wilson of Meridian, Miss., two sons, George Andrew Tillery of York, and William Joshua (Casey Covington) Tillery of Ridgeland, Miss., two grandchildren, Miriam Christina Jenkins and Faith Tillery Wilson, parents-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. W.T. Treadway of York, four sisters, Anne House of Tuscaloosa, Caroline Poythress of Birmingham, Nancy Sealy of Daphne, and Roberta Miles of Chattanooga, Tenn., and numerous nieces and nephews. Bumpers Funeral Home of York is in charge of arrangements.

Samuel Hogan

Greensboro

Samuel Hogan, 38, of Greensboro, passed on Monday, Oct. 4, 2004 at DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004 at 1 p.m. at Pine Grove Baptist Church in Greensboro, with the Rev. Alfonzo Bowen officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Greensboro. The body will lie in state from noon until time of service. Washington and Paige Mortuary is in charge of all arrangements.

Helen Beatrice Elam Rhodes

Greensboro

Helen Beatrice Elam Rhodes, a resident of Greensboro for over half a century, died at Colonial Haven Rest&Rehabilitation Center on Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2004, following a three-decade battle with rheumatoid arthritis and the loss of her husband of 58 years in June of this year.

Although she was born in Laurel, Miss., on New Year’s Day, 1919. Mrs. Rhodes went as an infant to Winston County, where she grew up. Following graduation from high school, she lived in California for a time before returning to Alabama, attending business school and working at the Alabama Girls’ Industrial School in Birmingham. Mrs. Rhodes attended Alabama College at Montevallo for one year. In 1946, she married the late John James Rhodes of Greensboro.

Mrs. Rhodes cheerfully devoted the rest of her life to creating and nurturing a close-knit, self sufficient, happy and loving family. She was an accomplished seamstress, an avid gardener, a serious bird lover and a celebrated cook and hostess. “Miss Helen’s” life embodied the terms wife, mother and friend.

Survivors include her children, Cheryl R. West of Hoover, John J. (Jack) Rhodes of Newbern, Joyce R. Adams (Dick) of Winter Garden, Fla., Robert E. (Bob) Rhodes (Arlene) of Havana and Myrial B. Morrison of Sawyerville. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Amy E. West (Barney Peterson) of Minneapolis, Minn., April E. Surprenant (Michael) of New York, N.Y., William R. Adams of London, England, and Benjamin R. Rhodes (Crystal) of Moundville, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, the TEL Sunday school class and special friends, Ruby Arrington, Eva Johnston, and Mary Lou May.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Friday, Oct. 1, 2004 at the Greensboro Baptist Church followed by interment at Oakwood Cemetery in Greensboro with the Rev. Dee McGuire and Dr. Denton Goodwin officiating. The family received friends at the church one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Arthritis National Research Foundation, 200 Oceangate, Suite 830, Long Beach, Calif., 90802, Hospice of West Alabama, 1800 McFarland Blvd, Suite 310, Tuscaloosa, 35401 or the Greensboro Baptist Church Building Fund, 908 Main Street, Greensboro. Pallbearers were Leland Avery, Mickey Harrow, Al Hill, Mark Long, Floye Meigs, and Jimmy Payne. Kirk Funeral Homes Greensboro Chapel in charge of arrangements.
