u The University of West Alabama would like to pay tribute to all Sumter County veterans during Homecoming festivities scheduled for Oct. 8 and 9. Veterans of any branch of the U.S. Armed Services should contact Karon Welch in the UWA Alumni Office at (205) 652-3586 to take part in the event.

u The Jefferson Volunteer Fire Department will sell barbecue by the pound, $6 per pound, and have a bake sale, Saturday, Oct. 9 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Jefferson Community House.

u The River City Bike Association is selling raffle tickets for a chance to win $1,000 cash. Tickets are $5 each and can be purchased from any RCBA member. Proceeds from the raffle will be used to purchase a big screen television for the residents of the Marengo Nursing Home as well as fund the $1,000 cash prize. The drawing will be Oct. 9. You do not have to be present to win.

Alfred L. Kennard will be at the Demopolis Civic Center in Demopolis from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, to sign copies of his book of inspirational poetry, Deep Intuition:

Dreams of Life, Victory, and Love.

u The Cemetery Board, City of Demopolis Beautification Commission and Historic Riverside Cemetery Beautification Committee is sponsoring Riverside Cemetery Clean-up Work Day, Wednesday, Oct. 13 at 8 a.m. Anyone who can help is asked to come and bring chain saws, hand tools and enthusiasm. u The Marengo County Historical Society is hosting a showing of the 1967 film, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, filmed here in Demopolis. The movie will begin at 7 p.m. at the Marengo Theatre in the Demopolis Theatre District and is free to the public. For more information call the Demopolis Historical Society at 289-0282.

u The Girl Scouts organizational meeting will be held in the U.S. Jones lunchroom on Oct. 21, at 3:30 p.m. Girl Scouts is for girls 4-17 years old. Adults may also join by becoming a Girl Scout volunteer. For more information, contact Tina DiBlasi, Tombigbee Girl Scout Office at 759-5421 ext.24

u Southern Danceworks will perform at the Old Main Street School at 7 p.m. Oct. 21. Admission is $10 for non-members of the two rivers arts council, which is sponsoring the event.

u The Marengo County Fall Forestry Tour will be Thursday, Oct. 21, at 10 a.m. at Wayne Lewis’ farm in Magnolia.

Plan to meet at Tutt Land Company in Linden, at 9 a.m. and then follow on to Mr. Lewis’ farm. Lunch will be provided after the tour.

u Demopolis Lions Club will hold its pancake breakfast at the First Baptist Church, drive thru and take out only, from 7 a.m.-11 a.m. Tickets are $4 each, and are available from members or by calling 289-4313.

u Two rivers arts council presents a Springer Theater production of Cotton Patch Gospel, at 7 p.m., Feb. 25, 2005, at the Old Main Street School.
