u The Marengo County Historical Society is hosting a showing of the 1968 film, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, filmed here in Demopolis. u The Annual Fall All-Breed Consignment Sale and Open Catalog Sale selling registered and grade horses will take place Saturday, Oct. 16 in Uniontown. Tack sale starts at 1 p.m., horse sale starts at 4 p.m. The sale will be held at the Alabama Livestock Auction. For more information, call (334) 628-2371.

u Cub Scouts and all the members of their family will be gathering Oct. 16-17 for the annual Prairie District Cub Family Campout. The event will be held at the lake complex on the University of West Alabama campus in Livingston. Cub families can pre-register with their dens or register the day of the event. The cost is $5 each for the Cub and his parent, and an additional $5 for any family member who wants a patch commemorating the event. Families are asked to bring their own tents, sleeping bags, flash lights or lanterns, clothes, personal care items and food for all meals. Campers will be treated to a campfire event Saturday night, but individual campsite fires are allowed with proper preparation. Helping out with the campout will be the members of Alpha Phi Omega fraternity at UWA.

u George McGovern and Bob Dole – two men very familiar with presidential debates – will share their political views with The University of Alabama community when they discuss current politics in a debate Tuesday, Oct. 19, at 8 p.m. in the Bryant Conference Center.

u Registration for adult classes at Marengo Technology will be Oct. 19 at 6 p.m. There will be a $53 fee for each class at the time of registration. Classes offered are electronics technology, Microsoft Office 2000, sewing, cabinetmaking and millwork and automotive service technology. u Southern Danceworks will perform at the Old Main Street School at 7 p.m. Oct. 21. Admission is $10 for non-members of the two rivers arts council, which is sponsoring the event.

u The Marengo County Fall Forestry Tour will be Thursday, Oct. 21, at 10 a.m. at Wayne Lewis’ farm in Magnolia. Plan to meet at Tutt Land Company in Linden, at 9 a.m. and then follow on to Mr. Lewis’ farm. Lunch will be provided after the tour. u Marian McKay and the Jazz Trio, the Magic City Sounds, will perform at 6 p.m. on Oct. 28 in the Demopolis Public Square. Admission is free. The concert is co-sponsored by the Two Rivers Arts Council and the Demopolis Area Chamber of Commerce.

u Trade days at Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park will be held Oct. 16 and 17. This large outdoors market has over 300 dealers, who offer common, unusual and “great find” items to shoppers and swappers. The Farley Field concession stand in the Trade Day area and the Sweet Shop in the main area of the park will be open. Trade Day hours are 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Park admission is $3 adults (12-61), $2 seniors (62+), $1 children (6-11) and free for ages five and younger. Pets are not allowed in the Trade Days area. Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park is 12 miles southwest of Bessemer. Off I-20/59 take exit 100 or off I-459 exit 1 and follow the signs to the park.

U Pine Apple hosts its Ninth Annual Hunter Appreciation Day, Saturday, Nov. 27, for residents, hunters, families and friends. The one-day event will feature arts and crafts, including gifts for Christmas, concessions, leather goods, woodcrafts, fresh plants, jewelry and toys. There will be a big buck contest, with a $500 top prize, $250 prize for ladies and a $150 prize for juveniles, as well as an antique car parade.

u Many people have family members who once attended and are buried at the Old Spring Hill Methodist Church. The cost of upkeep is very high. Many of our older, loyal benefactors have died.
