The Demopolis Tigers came out at home against 5A Greenville and immediately showed why they are undefeated.

On the first possession of the game for the Tigers, Devin Goodwin connected with Chad Schroeder for a 67-yard touchdown pass with 11:42 left in the first quarter.

After Goodwin’s extra point attempt sailed through the uprights, the Tigers jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead.

Demopolis struck again with 1:02 remaining in the first quarter when Goodwin again connected with Schroeder, this time for a 33-yard touchdown pass, as the Tigers increased their lead to 14-0.

With 11:12 left in the first half, Goodwin kept the ball on a quarterback keeper and rushed in two yards for the touchdown.

After Goodwin’s extra point missed, the Tigers lead stood at 20-0.

On the following kickoff, Greenville put up their only points of the game on a 92-yard kick return to cut into the Tigers lead, 20-7.

But Demopolis wasn’t through scoring.

At the 9:54 mark in the second quarter, Dusty Gracie rushed in 60 yards for another Tigers touchdown and a 26-7 lead.

The Tigers added another touchdown with 3:44 remaining in the first half, as Rod Jones took the ball in one yard for another Demopolis touchdown.

And with 2:13 left until halftime, Goodwin found Dontrell Miller open for a 41-yard touchdown pass.

After Goodwin’s extra point attempt missed, the Tigers lead increased to 38-7.

At halftime, the score remained the same.

And halftime stats?

Demopolis had 301 total yards of offense in the first half, while holding Greenville to -40 total yards and only one first down.

To begin the second half of play, Miller picked off a Greenville pass at the 39-yard line to give Demopolis possession.

And on the third play of the drive, Gracie swept right for a 37-yard touchdown with 10:55 left in the third quarter.

As Goodwin’s extra point kick sailed through the uprights, Demopolis brought their lead to 45-7.

The Tigers would score again with 1:49 left in the third to bring the Tigers lead to 52-7 when William Burrell rushed in three yards for the touchdown.

But Demopolis wasn’t through scoring yet, especially when Greenville’s head coach Al Briggs made pre-game comments about the Tigers being “a good team,” but not “one of the better teams we’ve seen all season.”

I guess Demopolis proved to coach Biggs and his team that they were the BEST team Greenville has seen all season.

“I’m not trying to take anything away from coach Goodwin,” Biggs said.

“You know, they have a good football team.

I just thought we matched up well with them.

And we did for about two minutes.”

“Two minutes” may be a conservative number for the visiting Greenville Tigers.

In all actuality, the game was over from the get-go, as Demopolis proved early and often that they were the better team.

With 11:18 remaining in the game, Goodwin connected with Colby Roberts for a 38-yard touchdown pass.

At this point, the Demopolis lead stood at 58-7.

But wait… there’s more.

At the 5:18 mark in the fourth quarter, Lucious Haywood rushed in 15 yards for the touchdown and a 64-7 Demopolis lead.

The Tigers took it easy the rest of the game and were happy to walk away with a 64-7 win over Greenville, ending their season undefeated at 10-0.

The win marks a prefect season for the Demopolis football team, as the playoffs now loom around the corner.

“So far, so good,” Demopolis head coach Doug Goodwin said.

“It’s not over yet.

But right now, this is just a great win and a step in the right direction.”

The Tigers will be hosting the St. James Trojans next Friday in the first round of the playoffs.
