LINDEN – After being admitted to Carraway Hospital in Birmingham on Monday, Linden Mayor Pat Vice is set for surgery this morning. The surgery comes after doctors recently discovered a tumor on Vice’s brain. Whether the tumor is cancerous or nor remains to be seen. The results of the surgery will give the doctors a better idea of Vice’s situation.

Until then Vice’s coworkers, friends and family are hoping for the best.

Through it all Vice has kept a positive attitude. Linden City Clerk Pam Duke said all things considered, Vice had a very healthy outlook.

“He is in really good spirits and seems to be feeling well,” Duke said. “I talked to him yesterday and he sounded good.”

While Vice may be in the hospital, he has not put aside his duties as mayor. Duke said the city of Linden is still number one on his mind.

“He was more concerned about what was going on over here,” Duke said. “He wanted to know how everything was going and if everything was OK. He is ready to get back.”

Linden City Administrator Cheryl Hall said she spoke to Vice early Tuesday morning and said he had maintained a positive attitude. Hall said Vice was ready for the surgery and a quick return.

“He was still in good spirits,” Hall said. “I talked to him this morning at about 8 a.m. and he was just anticipating the surgery and getting better.”

Hall said the exact time of the surgery was still up in the air, but it would be sometime this morning.

“He said they were going to have the surgery sometime in the morning, but he didn’t know exactly when,” Hall said. “He said they will know an approximate time today. I plan to call him later and fin out more.”

Through it all Vice has had many well-wishers and prayers sent his way. Ivan Allday, a longtime friend and city councilman, said he hopes to see Vice back to 100 percent soon.

“Pat is a good friend of mine,” Allday said. “I have known him for a long time and I hate it for him. I hope everything goes well.”

Allday said he spoke with Vice’s family Monday night and they too had maintained a positive attitude.

“I talked to his daughter last night and they seem to be doing good,” said Allday. “They said they wont know if the tumor is malignant or not until after the surgery.”
