Demopolis

Funeral for Mr. James H. Long Sr., 73, of Demopolis will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004 at Fairhaven Baptist Church in Demopolis with Dr. Allen Atkins and the Rev. Don Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Demopolis Memorial Gardens with military honors by the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Long family will receive friends at Fairhaven Baptist Church Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004 from 1 p.m. until service time.

Mr. Long died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004 at his home. He was a native of Burke County, Ga., and a resident of Demopolis since 1969. He was a member of Fairhaven Baptist Church where he had served as deacon, Sunday School superintendent, one of the founders and caretakers of the Memorial Garden at Fairhaven. Mr. Long was a veteran of the Korean Conflict where he served in the United States Navy. He was retired from the U.S. Coast Guard after 20 years of service and was a retired employee of the Corp of Engineers at Demopolis Lock and Dam as lockmaster after 20 years of service. He was a former Mason and Shriner. Mr. Long was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Elmore Long Sr. and Alma Wren Long.

He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Dorothy Dixon Long of Demopolis; two daughters, Susan Porter and her husband Alan of Huntsville and Cindy Haynes and her husband Gregory of Moulton; one son, James H. Long Jr. and his wife Kathy of Tyrone, Ga.; three sisters, Mary Powell of Savannah, Ga., Ann Brooks and her husband Bobby of Loganville, Ga., and Nancy Ogletree and her husband Barry of Atlanta; one brother, Frank Long Jr. and his wife Sybil of Giard, Ga.; and five grandchildren, James Matthew Long, Jeremy Porter, Katie Haynes, Ashley Long and Jake Porter.

Pallbearers are Shelby Broadhead, Gwinn Etheridge, Frank Lavender, Milton Murray, Eugene Corley and Tommy Tate.

Honorary pallbearers are the Mens Five Sunday School Class of Fairhaven Baptist Church.

Kidd-Robbins Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements.
