Each year people flock to Christmas on the River from many places and for many reasons. Some come to cook, some come to eat, but all come to have a good time.

Robert Baker and his family packed up their R.V. and crossed the Mississippi state line to enjoy the holiday fun. Baker sad they haven’t had a chance to get the full effect of the festival, but plan to take it all in once they get settled.

“We came from Laurel, Miss,” Baker said. “We came in at about 3 p.m. Thursday. We didn’t get to see a lot last night because we were mostly just trying to get set up and look for a parking lot. We are excited about the rest of the week though.”

Baker said Christmas on the River has become something of a tradition for his family.

“This is our thirteenth year,” Baker said. “I have actually been here a few more times than that. We really enjoy it. It is just a lot of fun.”

Baker said the cold temperatures just added to the Christmas atmosphere.

“The weather is cool, but it is nice right now,” Baker said. “Sunny sky’s are always better than rain. It is cool, but it is nice weather. ”

Baker said watching the parade was a big reason they made the yearly trip to Demopolis. He added the barbecue was number one on their list.

“We came for the parade, but we came for the barbecue especially,” Baker said. “They have a lot of neat things going on in the street too.”

Two anonymous barbecuers from Linden also made the short drive to Christmas on the River. They said their main goal was to brave the muddy conditions and have a good time.

“We would like to see them mark it off and asphalt this area and the field too. That way it won’t be so bad and muddy and more people will come out,” the barbecuers said. “It never fails. It is always seems to be muddy. But you’ve got to love it. That’s all there is too it. You’ve got to love it.”
