Esther Gore Culp

Moundville

Esther Gore Culp, 88, of Moundville, passed on Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004 at DCH Regional Medical Center.

Graveside services were held on Friday, Dec. 3, 2004 at 11 a.m. at Mobile Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Bob Barr officiating.

Survivors include one daughter, Martha Sue (Doug) Nelson of Moundville; one sister, Mary (Lee) McGee of Panama City, Fla.; two brothers, Bill (Jean) Gore of Panama City, Fla. and Marion (Ann) Gore of Colorado Springs, Colo.; three grandchildren, Tom B. (Windy) Nelson of Moundville, Krista N. (Carey) Jordan of Tuscaloosa and Matt Nelson of Moundville; and three great grandchildren, Bailey Nelson and Reagan Nelson, both of Moundville and Chloe Jordan of Tuscaloosa.

Pallbearers were Tom Nelson, Matt Nelson, Carey Jordan, Charlie Payne, Art Garrett, Joe Prahl, Brad Jones, and Ross Naze.

Esther Core Culp was born in Allenton, Fla. on Feb. 3, 1916.

Her parents were William H. and Mary Whitfield Gore.

She was married to Tom A. Culp who preceded her in death.

Mellie Maude Swain Long

Funeral services for Mrs. Mellie Maude Swain Long were held on Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004 at 2 p.m. from Bumpers Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Leon Ballard officiating.

Burial followed in Sumter Memorial Gardens in Cuba.

Mrs. Long, 89, of York, died Friday, Dec. 3 at Sumter Health and Rehab in York.

She was a member of York Baptist Church, interested in writing poetry, loved music, and was devoted to her family.

Years ago, she wrote the words to the Sumter County High’s Alma Mater.

She is survived by her son, Kenneth (Martha) Long of York; one daughter, Angela Long Brown of Jay, Fla.; three grandchildren, Glenn Long, Kimberly Brown-Mapoles, and Jimmy Lynn Brown, and four great-grandchildren, Bob Long, Hailey Long, Colton Mapoles, and Chandler Mapoles.

Pallbearers were Bobby Boswell, Bob Long, Glenn Long, Mike Spencer, Wes Bizilia, and Bobby Truelove.

Bumpers Funeral Home of York was in charge of arrangements.

Geneva Hendrix Simmons

Marion

Geneva Hendrix Simmons, 84, of Marion, passed on Monday, Nov. 29, 2004 in Perry County Nursing Home.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004 at 11 a.m. at Kirk Funeral Homes Marion Chapel, with the Revs. Allen Foster and Sam Colburn officiating.

Interment followed in Pine Crest Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends from 10 until 11 a.m. Wednesday morning before the service at Kirk Funeral Homes Marion Chapel.

Survivors include her husband, David W. Simmons of Marion; one daughter, Linda Hughey of Marion; one sister, Eddith Rayner of Monroe; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great- great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Wayne Smudricks, Travis Pepper, Bobby Tidwell, Paul Terry, Bud Carter, and Luther Woodfin.

Geneva Hendrix Simmons was born on April 13, 1920 in West Monroe, La.

Her parents were Oscar and Lucy Neal Hendrix.
