HOOVER – The Sweet Water Bulldogs didn’t just win the state title, they shattered previous records. Anthony Landrum, the game’s MVP, broke records for most touchdowns and most points scored in the 1-A state championship game. The most frightening part about it was he did it as a freshman.

Landrum was all over the field scoring four touchdowns and 24 points. The Chiefs never seemed to have an answer for Landrum as he ran wild each time the Bulldogs needed a big play.

Landrum said all the credit went to his offensive line.

“I have a great bunch of guys up front,” Landrum said. “They opened up holes that anybody could have run through. They did a great job fro me today.”

Behind the Bulldog line Landrum shredded the Chief defense for 175 yards on 20 carries. He had a long of 34 and an average of 8.8.

Sweet Water coach Stacy Luker said Landrum offered the Bulldogs the bog, quick back that most 1-A schools do not have. Luker also said the fact that the Bulldogs were able to rotate three other backs into the game helped tremendously.

“They were able to save their bodies,” Luker said. “All year long we have been able to do that. They stay fresh and can break the big run when they need to.”

Offense was a key for Sweet Water the entire game as they got a lot of player in on the action. Complementing Landrum were Dominic Holt, who rushed for 120 yards on 20 carries and a score and Travion Lockett, who had four carries for 24. Patrick Gamble also threw in three carries for 14 yards.

Bulldog quarterback Deon Williams also broke a record of his own. Williams went 0 for 5 passing for o yards. So how did he have a record breaking night? On the other side of the ball as a free safety.

Williams picked Chief passer Lamorris Stanley three times in the

game to set the Bulldogs up with a short field the whole game.

Williams said it was simply a matter of listening to his coaches and being where he needed to be.

“It is a little bit of instinct and a lot of coaching,” Williams said. “They put me in the right place every time. They really helped me out a lot this year.”

Williams said he was not even aware he had broken any records during the game.

“I didn’t know until a reporter came up to me at the end of the game,” Williams said. “I was just trying to focus on the game and get in the right place.”

Williams virtually shut down the Chief passing game and forced them to go to the run. The run was equally unsuccessful.

Overall, the Bulldogs held Hubbard to only 119 total yards. One of the biggest numbers was 0 for 12 on third down conversions. Much of this had to do with the fact that the pass was not an option.

Together Landrum and Willaims forced a one two punch on each side of the field the Chiefs could not solve. The end result will be a team full of state championship rings.
