LIVINGSTON – Despite a scrappy effort the University of West Alabama Tigers were unable to extend their winning streak to seven games falling 93-86 to the University of North Alabama.

The Tigers played close most of the night pulling to within two points several times late in the game, but it was not enough as the Lions put the Tigers in the losers column for the first time since Nov. 30.

North Alabama used hot shooting to build a 49-41 halftime lead. In the second half, however, it was the Tigers with the hot hand as they outscored the Lions 45-44. Unfortunately the first half hole was too much to overcome.

UNA connected on 30-of-55 (54.5 percent) shot attempts in the game to build a lead they would never give up. .

The Tigers shot 48.4 percent (15-of-31) from the floor in the first half, however the Lions led 49-41 at the break as they shot 58.6 (17-of-29) percent. Both teams shot 50 percent in the second half, however UNA held on for the seven-point victory.

Ty Mathis scored a team-high 23 points and pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds for the Tigers. Courtney Brown had 11 points, while Kevin Murphy added 10 points and a game-high eight assists. Jospeh Baker and Kareem Ward scored 10 points each for West Alabama.

Javier Palacios led all scorers with 27 points to go along with a team-high five assists for UNA. A.J. Gordon added 20 points and six boards, while Pete Lowe chipped in with 16 points on the night. Pervis Key had 15 points for the Lions, and Jerrell Vinson grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

West Alabama moves to 8-5 overall on the season and 1-1 in GSC play.

The Tigers resume action on Saturday when they travel to face Lincoln Memorial with the tip-off set for 7:00 p.m.
