Concerned citizens of Demopolis plan to take out the trash in the coming months. Demopolis Mayor Cecil P. Williamson and others, who want to see an improvement in the view around the River City, plan to form a group that will do just that.

In a recent city council meeting several citizens came before the council with complaints of noise and trash. Williamson said they were already aware of the problem and very enthusiastic about getting something done about it.

At the meeting Williamson proposed a Committee of Concerned Citizens and since that time has worked aggressively to get the ball rolling on the improvement organization. Williamson said she was working with city attorney Rick Manley to get things in order.

“Mr. Manley is working on that right now,” Williamson said. “We are just waiting to get the documents together and we will go from there.”

Williamson has made it known since taking office that she wants to see the downtown area and its unoccupied buildings turned into a positive thing for the city. Williamson said the group would also branch out to solve other problems.

“What we are going to do is get a concerned citizens group together to look at the dilapidated buildings and the overgrown lots and places where there are too many cars in the yard and vacant buildings in the downtown area,” Williamson said. “It is just an overall clean up of the city. Not just beautification, but basically clean up.”

While the city plans to do their part in the clean up effort, they will need help from private landowners. A great misconception is that it is the city’s responsibility to clean up every pile of rubbish left on the side of the road. In most cases, it is the landowner’s responsibility.

It is hoped the group will motivate landowners to clean up their property as well.
