A violent accident near Newbern claimed the life of two Uniontown residents on Friday afternoon.

Raymond Foster, 33, of Uniontown and Tonya Harris, 27, also of Uniontown, were traveling north on Highway 61 Friday. At 3:15 p.m., two-and-a-half miles south of Newbern, a vehicle driven by teenager Julie Foster of Uniontown entered the northbound lane and collided with theirs head-on.

It is believed that Foster and Harris’s vehicle then burst into flames. By the time paramedics arrived, their injuries had become fatal.

According to the report filed with the Alabama State Trooper office, a child, aged 3, riding in the backseat of Foster and Harris’s vehicle was also injured in the accident. Although the child’s name, injuries, and location have not yet been confirmed, it is believed the child has been transported to Birmingham for medical treatment.

Julie Foster, no known relation to the deceased, was admitted to Tuscaloosa’s DCH Regional Medical Center at 4:40 Friday afternoon with injuries suffered in the accident. A hospital official confirmed Foster’s medical status Monday morning as “fair.”

Greensboro’s Southern Academy, where Foster is enrolled as a junior and cheers for the varsity cheerleading squad, is taking steps to help students deal with the tragedy. A local minister was scheduled to speak to students at the school Monday afternoon.

It is believed the poor Friday weather, most notably a light rain that may have led to slick road conditions on the two-lane highway, likely contributed to the accident.
