Residents of South Stewart and West Jackson Street were startled by the sound of twisting steel Thursday afternoon around 6 p.m. when a Ford Escort collided with a Ford Explorer sending one driver to the hospital.

Both cars received extensive damage and a fire hydrant was also caught in the mix. The Demopolis Police Department, Marengo County Sheriff’s Department and Demopolis Fire Department all responded to the scene.

The patient was transported by Tombigbee EMS.
