Relay for Life only five weeks away

With only five weeks away it is crunch time for Relay for Life teams throughout Demopolis. Monday team captains gathered once again to discuss their progress and things are looking good.

Alicia King, who is helping to oversee the Relay for the River City said the time is drawing near to get teams together. King said last years Relay was a huge success and challenged everyone to try to beat those numbers.

“We are five weeks away from the Relay,” King said. “The goal for this years Relay is $47, 834. We were able to raise $45,000 last year and we felt we could do even better this time.”

Many Relay events will be going on in the coming weeks to do just that. Gulf States paper will be hosting a golf tournament in May and Demopolis One Stop will be holding a car wash this weekend.

Some have already seen a lot of success. King said a familiar face had surfaced as the top earner to this point.

“Our top individual fundraiser so far has been Tommy Vice who has raised over $2,016,” King said. “Our top team to date is One Stop building supply.”

King saidf the important thing was to get organized and get going.

“Relay s only five weeks away,” King said. “It is very important to go ahead and start getting donations and organizing fundraisers because it will be here before we know it.”

If you have not formed a team it is not too late. Anyone interested in getting involved with the Relay or forming a team should contact Diane Peabody at 289-2106.

Some changes have been made to the Relay this year. This year’s program will be held at the Demopolis Sportsplex on field number 10.

Bank night will be held on May 19 at the Demopolis Civic Center.

The final meeting for team captains will be Monday May 2 at 6 p.m. at the Demopolis Yacht Basin.
