DEMOPOLIS – This afternoon at 11 a.m., the Demopolis High School varsity softball team will be battling Elmore County on the road in round two of the AHSAA 4A softball playoffs.

DHS softball head coach Wayne Harris has never seen Elmore County play before, but he does know they have gotten better each year.

“There’s not any cupcakes left to play, I know that,” Harris said.

“Ultimately, we have to go and play our game.

They’ve got one girl that does all of their pitching and apparently they swing the bat real well.

We’ll just have to go back to fundamentals – play defense and scores run and you’ll win the ball game.”

According to coach Harris, the Lady Tigers biggest talent at this time of year is “the mental edge.”

“Plus the fact that we’ve got kids that know where we want to get to,” Harris said.

“Elmore County hasn’t gotten there yet, but I’m sure that hunger is still there.

But hopefully we recognize what we have to do and go over there and play 14 strong innings.”

Being on the road shouldn’t be too big of a challenge for DHS, according to coach Harris.

“We’re around .500 on the road,” Harris said.

“But last year we traveled to Trinity and we won sub-state.

And the year before we went to Saint James and won sub-state there.

So the last couple of years we’ve been on the road and won on the road to get to the state tournament, so it’s nothing unusual for us.”

Demopolis will go with Brittany McGee in game one and will opt for Sara Davis in game two.

The action begins this afternoon at 11 a.m. in the best-of-three series against Elmore County on the road.
