No matter the elements, Relay for Life will go on. Many forecasters have predicted rain for Friday night, which would pose a threat to the nights Relay events. However, a safe dry place has been designated.

Alicia King, who is helping organize this years Relay events said if rain should come they would simply move to the Civic Center.

“If it rains we will have the event in the Civic Center,” King said. “We will proceed as planned we will just have it indoors.”

On a positive note, King said participation is at an all time high.

“We have been very pleased with the participation so far,” King said. “So far we have 20 teams. I think that is the most we have ever had here.”

Participants in the Marengo County Relay for Life will include:

Amedisys Home Health, Comfort Care Hospice, Preferred Medical Services, Demopolis High School, Curves and F&F Drugs, The Demopolis Times, Quest Club, Gulf States, Robertson Bank, Foster Farms, Greene County Steam Plant, Woodhaven Manor Nursing Home, Demopolis Middle School, Wal-Mart, River city Bike Association, U.S. Jones Elementary, I-Stop Building Supply, Suttles Truck Leasing, Bryan W. Whitfield Memorial Hospital, Regions Bank and Al Muquit Shrine Temple.

Set up for tomorrows event will begin at noon, with the survivors making the first lap at 6 p.m. The luminary service is set for 9 p.m.

The day’s events will take place at the Demopolis Sportsplex on soccer field number 10.

Again, the local Relay Committee is asking people to observe a few rules to ensure a safe, fun relay. There will be a sidewalk that runs straight to the soccer field providing an easy access to bring in tents, chairs and other items.

Relay participants are asked under no circumstances to drive their vehicles on the soccer field. They have also asked that participants do not drive on the fields to unload and to remind all team members of this.

Grills will be permitted, but it is asked that people try not to burn the grass and do not dump hot coals on the grass. The field is equipped with lights so lumination should not be a problem. Campsites should also be down and removed from the field on Saturday morning.

The Relay Committee plans to try to have the campsites marked off and available on a first come, first serve basis. There will also be an area designated on the sidelines for motorcycles to park for their display.
