The beautiful mansion located in downtown Demopolis is soon to have fewer visiting hours.

The state budget cuts have caused Gaineswood, along with other historic sites, to change their routines.

Nathan Bryan Whitfield built Gaineswood between 1843 and 1861. The home is considered one of America’s finest examples of the Greek Revival style of architecture. It is known for its domed ceilings and vis–vis (face-to-face) mirrors.

Gaineswood, located at 105 South Cedar Ave., will be reducing its hours for “walk-in” tours beginning July 11. The mansion will now be open from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. It will also be closed on Saturdays with the exception of special programs and events, rentals, and group tours of ten or more booked in advanced.

According to Matt Hartzell, the Gaineswood site director, over the past two years both visitation and income have increased on Saturdays when there has been a special event, rental, or a scheduled group tour.

“We’ve seen a trend toward higher weekday numbers, and two of our major site programs-Heritage Appreciation Days in March and our landscape program each spring- take place during the week,” he said. “We need to keep the site open when we receive the most visitation and income.”

Gaineswood will still host Harvest Fest, October 15, and the annual open house for Christmas on the River, December 3.
