Legion juniors split double-header, head to Trussville

CENTREVILLE–The American Legion Post 29 West Alabama juniors baseball team hasn’t been able to get quite as much on-field work as they’d like this week, as double-headers against a pair of teams from Tuscaloosa County were cancelled.

But coach Jonathan Lynsey says the team is still improving in advance of their Saturday game against Trussville. The most recent evidence came in the team’s most recent game, the back end of a double-header with a powerful Bibb County team. Despite having lost their previous two games against Bibb, Post 29 sprinted out to an early ten-run lead and held on for a 14-13 victory that moved the team back to four games above .500.

“When you score 14 runs,” Lynsey says, “you should be able to win.”

Leading the charge was slugger Chase Felts, who drove several balls to the warning track as West Alabama battered the Bibb County pitching. Randy Martin and Robbie Smith also made their presence felt in the offensive outburst.

Felts and Smith also contributed from the mound, as each got a start and pitched well against the hosts.

If Hurricane Dennis holds off long enough to allow the game against Trussville to be played, it will provide West Alabama with another good test as they prepare for the District tournament, to be held the weekend of July 14 at Tuscaloosa Academy. The Trussville contest and an even-likelier-to-be-cancelled game against West Blocton Sunday are the only remaining games on the schedule before the District.

“I’m really happy with the way we’ve improved,” says Lynsey, “and I’ll be confident going into the tournament. If we play up to our capabilities, we’re going to win.”
