EUTAW-On Tuesday Aug. 2 the Eutaw Police Department will sponsor a party on the Courthouse Square designed to tell neighborhood crime and drugs that they no longer have a place in their city.

The party is part of a national night out designed as a going away party for crime and drugs in the city and will feature several fun events and special guests.

Eutaw Police Chief Reginald Spencer Jr. said they have planned several fun activities and hope everyone will stop by.

“We will have our second annual night out and we would like to invite everyone to come out,” Spencer said. “We will have entertainment and games. We are asking everyone to come out to the old courthouse square.”

Face painting, dart throwing and other fun games with prizes will be provided for children.

There will also be plenty of entertainment as there will be poetry reading, live music, a praise dance team, choral groups and other talented groups. One of the most anticipated forms of entertainment at the event will also be the step team’s from fraternities and sororities.

Spencer said the step shows were one of the biggest draws for last year’s event.

“Last year the younger crowd really enjoyed the step shows,” Spencer said. “We will have them back as well as poetry reading and I think Sen. Bobby Singleton may also stop by.”

Several events and games will be provided to ensure everyone has lots of fun. However, the main idea of the party is to promote safety and send criminals packing. The safety aspect of the night out will be promoted with free booster seats, car seats and gun locks as well as Kids ID’s.

The event will begin at 6 p.m. and last as long as the partygoers hang around.

National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime efforts; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

National Night Out is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and co-sponsored locally by the Eutaw Police Department.

Nationally, the event will involve over 10,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world. In all, over 34 million people are expected to participate in “America’s Night Out Against Crime.”
