DEMOPOLIS- But, don’t run. These Lions are friendly.

The Demopolis Lions Club is currently sponsoring two, year-round projects to help serve the community.

According to Lions president, Kathi Wilson, the Club is always collecting brown paper bags to donate to the community food bank.

“It keeps the food banks from having to buy them,” she said. “I think it cost $22 for 100 bags.

Wilson said the food bank serves over 100 customers a week so “every bag saved helps them out.”

Brown paper bags can be dropped off to Kathi Wilson at Unicef and she will deliver them to the food bank.

The Lions Club main concentrations are people with vision problems and diabetes, and since the two so often go together, it is only right for members to cater a project toward the cause.

“We collect used eyeglasses and they go to the main center in Birmingham where they match them up with people who need them but can’t afford them,” Wilson said.

If you have old glasses and you want to donate them, you can drop them off with Wilson at Unicef, or at most Demopolis eye doctors.

The Demopolis Lions Club also serves as a “liaison” for Camp Seale Harris, a summer camp for children with diabetes.

“If children qualify for the camp,” Wilson said. “The expenses are paid.”

The Demopolis Lions Club is also planning for its annual pancake breakfast in October and members are also working on a Barbeque Butt sale for sometime in the fall.

The Demopolis Lions Club will meet the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at “Smoking Jacks” BBQ Restaurant – HWY #80 west at 6 p.m. For further information call Danny at 289-1123.
