MARION/PERRY-Hula hoops, sidewalk chalk art, Frisbee, cookies and juice.

Sounds like recess for most children, but the description is of the last week at the Marion-Perry County Library.

According to librarian, Libby Lunney, a little over 20 children participated on Monday, the numbers doubled on Tuesday, and by Thursday more than 50 children showed up to participate in the fun.

With the manpower of 27 youth and 7 adults, volunteers played games, read, and worked on arts and crafts with the children.

On Friday, the children will perform a skit based on a book that they have been working on all week with the Youth Group at Rosalind Hills Baptist Church of Roanoke, Virginia.

Preschoolers will perform “Brown Bear, Brown Bear,” kindergarten and first grade will do “The Very Hungry Caterpillar,” second and third graders will do “Where the Wild Things Are,” and fourth, fifth and sixth graders will perform “Green Eggs and Ham.”

Along with perfecting their mini-plays, children played with hoola hoops and Frisbees, played hand games, did arts and crafts and sidewalk chalk art, and enjoyed Bible stories performed by the volunteers.

There was also a line to be lifted into the air by volunteers, creating an elevator effect.

The last day of the program is Friday, but Lunney said she is satisfied with library numbers.

“In the past two days we have had over 100 people come through the library each day.”

The “Festival in the Square” is today from 5-8 p.m. There will be free hot dogs and sodas, cake walk, basketball, face painting, free book giveaways, an inflatable moonwalk, and much more.
