Even Katrina hasn’t been able to disrupt the march of high school football in the Black Belt.

A full weekend of regional football will proceed as originally scheduled despite the impact of Hurricane Katrina Monday evening. Kicking things off Thursday night at 7:30 will be the home opener for the West Alabama Preparatory Titans as they square off with Columbiana’s Cornerstone Chargers.

WAP will be looking to give interim coach Marshall Murphy his first win at the helm and rebound from a 64-0 pasting at the hands of Marengo Academy a week ago. Running backs Gene Samuels and Greg Yelverton found little room to run against the AISA 2A Longhorns and will hope to get on track against the 1A Chargers.

The Chargers stand at 1-0 on the young season, having hosted and defeated the Sumter Academy Eagles by the score of 20-0 last week.

All other games throughout the region will be played Friday night as scheduled. An AHSAA spokesman told the Times Wednesday that Sumter County’s home game against Midfield was the Black Belt’s only AHSAA game under consideration for postponement, but an announcement on the organization’s web site later that day indicated that the only schools affected by scheduling changes would be those closer to Mobile.
