A Forkland man was killed just after midnight Sunday when he was run over by an all-terrain vehicle, according to the Greene County Sheriff’s Department.
Between 12:30 and 12:45 a.m. May 14, Greene County sheriffs received reports that 50-year-old Steven Hagler had been struck and killed by a four-wheeler near his home on Cypress Cove Road near Forkland, Greene County Sheriff Johnny Isaac said.
The driver of the ATV, 19-year-old Robbie Anderson, was taken to DCH hospital in Tuscaloosa for “severe facial injuries.” A second ATV rider was also on the rural dirt road at the time of the incident, Isaac said, and he was questioned by investigators.
No charges were been filed in the incident as of Monday afternoon.
Isaac said the department received reports “a few weeks ago” that four-wheelers had been “riding up and down the road at fast speeds.”
Isaac said Hagler was involved in a verbal confrontation with the ATV riders around the time of those reports.
Isaac speculated that the young ATV riders were again traversing the road at high rates of speed and Hagler came out to confront them. He was armed, the sheriff added.
“Mr. Hagler did come out to the road with a gun,” Isaac said, responding to reports that gunfire was heard near the scene, “but no shots were fired.”
Isaac said the case is under investigation. In addition to the Greene County Sheriff’s Department, the Alabama Bureau of Investigation was reported to have been on the scene later Sunday morning.
