DEMOPOLIS &045; Employees of Westside Elementary discovered that the school had been robbed when they arrived to work yesterday morning.

The perpetrators broke into the school and rummaged through desks and other items before stealing a cash register. No one has been charged in connection with the incident.

Public Safety Director Jeff Manuel said that the police department is in the process of identifying those responsible. He said that the robbery occurred between 6 p.m. and 7 a.m. and that electronics and cash were taken from several rooms.

Glass said that the robbers broke three windows to gain access to the school buildings. She said that they also broke an old wooden window that is no longer used. She said then gained access to several buildings on the campus

Superintendent of the Demopolis City School System Dr. Wesley Hill said that the most of the damage was just broken glass. He said that it appears that the people that broke in were rummaging to find money.

Glass said that when the children arrived at school in the morning they were sent to the lunchroom and watched videos while police searched the school and performed an investigation. Hill said he was called by the principle that morning before he had left his home and he was informed of the incident. He said he then went to the school to help out.

Glass said that Hill and councilors for the school made sure the children felt safe and that classes returned to their normal schedules around 9:30 a.m.
