DEMOPOLIS &045; The 2007 track season will be a season of experimenting for the Demopolis High School track team. The Tigers will field a team that will include mostly freshmen and sophomores.
Gone from last year’s squad is state champion Dwiuan White, who played a major role on last season’s talented team. Some of the speed will be lost this year, but the longer running events should produce quality results.
Brad Braxton, a sprinter, and Barry Sanders, a thrower, are the only seniors on the young squad this year. They will provide the leadership needed to guide the youthful team.
Brian Taylor and Shantrell Braxton are expected to do well for coach Davis, who is in his fourth year coaching track.
There were more athletes to try out for this year’s team than last year. There were so many out that some had to be cut, which is a first at Demopolis, which is also very encouraging considering Demopolis does not have track facilities.
With the numbers up in terms of participants, the development of the young talent may be ahead of future track facilities.
Demopolis will lack in team points in most track events, as it has in the past, because with the lack of facilities events like they don’t field events such as high jump, pole vault, and hurdles.
The Tigers will participate in a practice meet next Thursday in Greensboro. Its first regular season meet will take place at Northridge in Tuscaloosa on Saturday, March 17.
