GREENSBORO &8212; Matt Bouler is one of the premier players in the area. At least according to scouts from across the state that have had the chance to see him in recent combines at the University of West Alabama and at Spain Park.
Bouler, who will be a senior next fall at Southern Academy, has been deemed one of the top recruits in the state after his workout at Spain Park earlier this month. The young man, who plays both running back and linebacker for the team, attended combine for the two events on consecutive weekends in the past month.
While the UWA combine didn&8217;t hand out awards or rankings Bouler said he was able to workout with around 300 other players. He said while the workouts allow players to interact with one another the biggest draw to attending the combines are the scouts that attend.
Bouler said each player at the workouts performed a vertical jump test, long jump, bench press reps, the L drill, shuttle run and were clocked at the 40-yard dash. He said the players also got to meet some of the head coaches on hand and receive some one on one coaching from guys at the next level.
Not only were coaches abound, though; Bouler said the scouts at the combine in Spain Park were the ones that ranked the players at the end of the workout. That is a big thing, considering Bouler placed eighth and there were scouts on hand from major scouting authorities.
Though Bouler talks about getting interest from schools from the combines, he admits that more than one school has expressed interest in him becoming a part of their program. Bouler has seen interest from UWA, Arkansas, Middle Tennessee and has had feelers from Auburn.
He said Auburn is where he would like to end up when all is said and done. He said he will likely play special teams there if the school continues to pursue him, but for next season he will continue trying to put up numbers to help his cause at Southern Academy.
