DEMOPOLIS &8212; Following on the heels of the decision to start a Pop Warner Football League for the youth of the city, a youth cheerleading squad is being formed to rally on the teams of youngsters.
Heading up the cheerleading side of the Pop Warner league is Leretta Garrett, who has experience teaching youth cheerleading in the past.
Garrett, who said she has always wanted Demopolis to get a youth football league, said she told McVay there was a lot more interest in starting a youth cheerleading squad than he thought after his initial skepticism. She said if the number of cheerleaders that sign up for the group outnumber the number of Pop Warner players she wouldn&8217;t be surprised.
Garrett said she hopes to find individuals with experience in the sport of cheerleading to teach those that join the proper techniques on which to build. She said the cheerleaders will be broken down into age groups in correlation with the Pop Warner league and that anyone wishing to participate will be allowed to do so.
Garrett said ages seven through 12 can participate and registration will be held from July 4 until October 1 at Omni Sports in Demopolis.
