DEMOPOLIS &8212; The former West Alabama Prep facility could potentially become an early childhood education facility for the Demopolis City Schools if the property is in the best interest of the school, Superintendent Wayne Vickers said Friday.

Vickers said the proposal is still &8220;under very serious consideration,&8221; and he plans to discuss it at Monday&8217;s Board of Education meeting.

As of Friday, Vickers said he has received building inspection reports from Martin Inspectional Services and electrical and plumbing inspection reports from Anderson Plumbing and Heating. He is waiting on some additional information about painting estimates and estimates on the condition of the roof. He has also had members of the DCS staff looking at the technology already in the facility to determine the cost and feasibility of getting online with their current server.

With all of this information, Vickers said, he plans to discuss the next phase of the project with the board members.

According to Vickers the Auburn City School system, which is noted for its innovative programs, has had their Auburn Early Learning Center in operation for a few years and it has been very successful. DCS could use the program as a model for a similar program here, he said.

Currently, with 13 kindergarten classes and two pre-kindergarten programs, there are approximately 235 students who could be a part of the program.

Vickers said he thinks there is also a response from the community for this kind of facility.

Throughout the discussion process, he said, DCS is looking out for the best interest of the students.
