BELLMONT &8212; A crash on U.S. Highway 80 West at 11:35 a.m. Saturday resulted in a fatality, five injuries, four mangled vehicles and stopped traffic headed toward Livingston and Meridian for approximately three hours.
Spokeswoman for the Alabama State Trooper Post in Tuscaloosa, which handled the wreck, said the accident report has yet to be compiled, so specifics regarding the wreck were sparse. The spokeswoman said a fatality report was filed for the accident.
Sumter County Sheriff Johnny Hatter confirmed the death, though his department wasn&8217;t involved in the investigation, and said the victim was a passenger in a red jeep Cherokee involved in the accident.
Hatter said the accident caused delays for traffic heading west on the highway, though he wasn&8217;t sure how long the delay was. Demopolis resident Katherine Luker said the wreck caused a delay of approximately three hours.
Luker said most of those injured in the wreck were taken out of their vehicles and driven to the hospital when troopers arrived. She said there was then a long wait as someone was called to come remove the corpse of Mayfield from the rear seat of the vehicle.
