DEMOPOLIS &8212; As a way to promote historical preservation locally, the Demopolis Historic Preservation Commission will unveil its first in a series of plaques for its plaque project at 5:15 p.m. on Nov. 20 at the steps of Rooster Hall.

According to Aliquippa Allen, one of the commissioners, the commission recently became a certified local government commission, which allows them to compete for state funding to support local preservation projects.

The project will begin with the unveiling of the first plaque at Rooster Hall. The remainder of the plaques will be distributed to historic sites in the community. Allen said, a plaque will be presented to Gwen Turner, who helped get the commission certified.

The commission has approximately 100 plaques preordered for historical sites, but more can be ordered and purchased, Allen said. The sites themselves were determined by an independent survey done to determine structures of historical value.
