Taxpayers in all but one of Alabama’s counties, including Marengo County, have income tax refund checks being held by the Internal Revenue Service because the checks were returned as undeliverable.

Refund checks worth more than $2.1 million are waiting for 1,840 Alabamians who have not updated their addresses with the IRS. The checks, averaging about $1,144, can be claimed as soon as this information is updated.

Nationwide, the IRS is trying to connect more than 115,000 taxpayers with checks worth about $110 million in time for the holidays. Some individuals are due more than one check.

If you are one of these people, the IRS has made it easy for you to update your information and claim your refund.

The “Where’s My Refund?” tool on IRS.gov enables taxpayers to check the status of their refunds. A taxpayer must submit his or her Social Security number, filing status and amount of refund shown on their 2006 return. The tool will provide the status of their refund and in some cases provide instructions on how to resolve delivery problems.
