Writerly aspirations

Although she is only 10 years old, Mikala Thornton already has many things of which to be proud. The fifth grader, at U.S. Jones Elementary, spends most of her free time filling up her notebook with poems and stories.

She started to get into writing after her teacher, Dana Hill, asked the class to write poems and stories from a prompt she gave them. From then on, Mikala has continued her work.

Her dad, Russell Thorton, describes her as a real &8220;go-getter,&8221; which is evident in her writing. He said where there is a lemonade stand to be manned or a cookie sale to start, Mikala can be found.

Although her gift with words is just beginning to blossom, Mikala says she hopes to keep writing because it makes her happy.

As she waits for the chance to get her works published, she remains down to earth, saying she is most excited about starting middle school and having her very own locker.

These are just a sampling of Mikala&8217;s writings:

Love is special

I love you forever, No matter what you do, you&8217;re special to me and I&8217;m special to you.

You like me by day, and love me by night. When our eyes met, it was love at first sight.

I love you, and you love me. We&8217;re meant for each other, but people don&8217;t see.

Our feelings for each other are bigger than gold. We&8217;ll still love each other at 100 years old!

Mostly we&8217;re nice, but we have a few fights. But I love you forever, from morning to night.

I hug and kiss you all day, and all night. Your heart is full of gold, that&8217;s what makes it so bright!

THE SECRET MISSION!

Dear Agent,

Go to the little ducky park in the middle of the town. Meet me there at noon today. Signed no name! P.S. Bring some bread!

Thanks!

I vaguely thought about what this was for. My sister and I got the bread and headed for the ducky park. We quickly saw a man sitting on a hologram seat. (Remember&8230; this is 2999!) He handed me a bottle and I asked him, &8220;Why the ducky park?&8221;

He quickly said, &8220;Are you the agent?&8221; I thought it had a catchy ring to it so I quickly replied, &8220;Yes, Yes I am!&8221;
