Player of the Week: Cameron Barger Sophomore Baseball Demopolis High School

This round of Player of the Week honors go out to an unlikely source who emerged to spark an unlikely comeback. After Tiger pitchers had surrendered 13 runs in Saturday’s first game against Andalusia, their struggles continued later that afternoon against Thomasville. DHS hurlers had allowed 15 runs to cross the plate in the game’s first four innings. With runners on and only one out in the fifth, Demopolis High School baseball coach Brett Ramer handed the ball to Cameron Barger. The sophomore who spends most of his time helping keep track of the book or pitch counts emerged from the dugout for what many would have presumed was mop-up duty. It proved to be anything but to Barger.

His purpose was fulfilled when he completed two and two-thirds innings, striking out two and allowing only one earned run while picking up the win in the Tigers’ improbable come-from-behind victory over rival Thomasville.

So while he may not be the traditional limelight type of player, Barger is this week’s Player of the Week for coming through when his team needed him the most.
