DEMOPOLIS &8212; Although they held their last team meeting this week, the organizers of Marengo County Relay for Life are still hard at work planning their event at River Field on April 25.

According to Wendy Brown, chairman of the event, the teams will be collecting donations until April 22, when they will total them up before the event. Although they expect to get the majority of their pledges then, participants can continue to raise funds at one-site fundraisers.

But it&8217;s not all about the money either, she said. There will be musical entertainment and moonwalks for the children. She is also putting together a list of speakers to talk to the crowd about the importance of raising funds for cancer research, which is the event&8217;s primary focus.

Just a few of the teams participating, according to Brown, are Foster Farms, Bryan W. Whitfield Memorial Hospital and Dana Suttles Trucking. Brown said there are also teams for the Demopolis City School system, including the Demopolis High School chapter of DECA and DHS softball.

A returning team this year is Robertson Banking Company, who will have the help of their biggest fundraiser, Tommy Vice, Brown said.

Another change for this year&8217;s event is that Regions Bank will be responsible for handling all Relay for Life donations. Also, if people want to make donations in memory of someone, Regions will handle that as well, she said.

Another way to donate is to purchase a luminaria. Some luminaria celebrate the survivorship of people who have battled cancer and lived to tell the tale. Many commemorate the lives of those who have been lost to this disease. All represent a person who has been profoundly affected by cancer and the family and friends who continue to be touched by that experience.

Luminarias can be obtained by contacting any team member or by going to the event&8217;s Web site http://events.cancer.org-/rflmarengoal.

Last year&8217;s total fundraising goal was $65,000, but by the end of the yearlong process, Relay for Life was able to raise over $66,000 from team and individuals donations.
