Affordable housing means hope for residents

DEMOPOLIS &8212; Just off U.S. Hwy 80, tucked neatly away from the regular traffic that livens Demopolis daily is Edgemont Drive, which is home to a tiny community known as Edgemont Village.

While it offers a taste of suburbia to its inhabitants, the 36-unit housing development also provides affordable homes to low-income families.

Perhaps that feature, more than any other makes Edgemont Village unique. Unlike traditional low-income housing, Edgemont Village seems to provide each resident with a sense of community in addition to individual space.

According to Almo, that luxury is important to Edgemont&8217;s tenants as the majority of them are single parents.

That sense of security is also important to Paulette Letson.

Letson moved into her home in Edgemont Village at the end of November, shortly after the houses were completed.

According to Almo, Edgemont Village residents are afforded lawn care services bi-weekly.

The village consists of 30 three-bedroom and six four-bedroom houses. Each is equipped with two bathrooms, a carport and all necessary appliances.
