LINDEN &8212; Two school system employees face termination this week after a called board meeting to discuss personnel matters Wednesday.

According to Superintendent Scott Collier, the decision is part of an annual evaluation process the school system must go through to determine who they can and cannot employ for the next school year. These two employees were classified as support staff &8212;aides, secretaries, bus drivers &8212; but the status of certified employees will be discussed at the board next meeting on May 12.

Collier said the decision to terminate an employee is based on a number of factors, one of which includes an employee&8217;s performance. But Collier also said the system is willing to rehire a former employee under the right circumstances.

Further complicating the employment matter is the issue of the system&8217;s budget, which hinges primarily on state funding. For this fiscal year, the system received approximately 60 percent of its funding from the state.

But state legislators have yet to agree on a suitable education budget, leaving Collier and other superintendents across the state in limbo.

The state house of representatives passed the education budget last week, sending it for approval to the Senate. On Tuesday the Senate Finance and Taxation-Education Committee approved the state education budget. The proposed budget will then go to the full Senate for a vote before seeking approval from the governor.
