The Demopolis Times&8217; first effort to award the honor of Athlete of the Year produced 14 tremendous nominees who each made considerable cases for the recognition. The award was designed in such a way as to not give credence to class, school, sport or gender in its awarding. Rather, from its inception, it was intended to honor greatness in athleticism and character.

After careful review of each candidate, it was determined that no athlete in Marengo County was more deserving of the honor than Demopolis&8217; three-sport superstar, Jasmine Simmons.

She does not just play three sports; she is outstanding at all of them. But it is basketball and softball that likely offer her the possibility of an athletic scholarship to college. She served as the floor general of the Tiger basketball team, averaging 14 points, six assists and nearly five steals per game as a senior.

On the softball field, she brought a nearly unparalleled athleticism to the shortstop position and was a regular kleptomaniac on the base paths, swiping 19 bags on the season. At the plate, the Tiger leadoff hitter had nine doubles, two triples, one home run, 14 walks and 28 runs scored.

Her fielding abilities also earned her the Tigers&8217; defensive most valuable player honor.

Still, despite her gaudy numbers and breathtaking athleticism, it is Simmons&8217; demeanor that has endeared her to teammates, coaches and fans.

Her humble yet confident approach to every game, every at-bat, every situation has helped earn her recruiting attention from schools such as Alabama Southern, Lurleen B. Wallace and Alabama State. While she is not yet certain what sport she will play at the next level, it is a certainty she will play at the next level.

Her pivotal production in all three sports combined with her sterling academic standing, quiet confidence, endearing humility and undeniably strong character make Jasmine the embodiment of the spirit behind The Demopolis Times Athlete of the Year award. And even though she may not acknowledge it, Jasmine Simmons has more than earned her place as Marengo County&8217;s top athlete.
