DEMOPOLIS &8212; At approximately 5 p.m. on Friday, Rachel Burke, an employee at the downtown branch of Robertson Banking Company, was on her way to her car to head home for the weekend. In a matter of moments, she found herself on the ground with paramedics surrounding her.

According to onlookers, Burke was crossing the crosswalk on Capitol Street when a black Chevrolet Silverado truck with Florida plates turned left at the intersection with Walnut Street and hit Burke.

The driver of the truck, Bob Brothers, said he made the turn and saw Burke crossing the road, but did not intend to hit her.

Brothers said Burke hit the truck near the front passenger side tire. His wife Landy, who was in the truck with him at the time, said the two were visiting a friend&8217;s fish camp near Demopolis and were merely driving through town when the accident happened. The couple seemed visibly upset.

Tombigbee EMS, Demopolis Fire and Rescue and Demopolis Police responded to the scene, and Burke was transported to Bryan W. Whitfield Memorial Hospital. When first responders came to the scene, they advised her not to move. Burke was able to communicate with the paramedics and was not unconscious after the collision.

Employees of Robertson Bank said the intersection they cross each day to get to their company&8217;s parking lot is a dangerous one, and this incident could have happened to any of them at any time.
