DEMOPOLIS &8212; The Gilbertown Bass Club hosted its annual tournament at the city landing Saturday. The event drew 53 boats, easily surpassing the number of vessels for which tournament organizers had hoped.

The draw also greatly exceeded the turnout of the event&8217;s previous installments. The 2007 tournament pulled 35 boats while its predecessor attracted 28.

The tournament&8217;s top spot paid out $1,033 to Gregg McPhearson and Roger Etheridge. The tandem&8217;s catch 15.38 pounds was nearly two pounds more than Wes Wiggins and Shawn Jordan&8217;s second place pull of 13.52 pounds. Dax Bumpers and Jamie Harrell caught 13.3 pounds to take third place. Their haul included the biggest fish of the day, a 4.68-pounder. That stroke of luck earned the team $530.
