Local community members were honored on June 16 for their service and volunteerism with the American Red Cross. They were also inducted into the American Red Cross&8217;s Circle of Heroes.

Inductees for this year were Ron Few, Mitzi Gates, Calvin Martin, Rusty Nichols, Emily King-Owens, Goodloe Sutton and Rob Wynne. The Rev. Winston Williams, board vice chair, was the guest speaker for the event, and offered words about the importance of volunteerism.

Calvin Martin serves as the county commissioner for district 4 and is an engineer for the Alabama Department of Transportation.

Emily King-Owens, another nominee, said of volunteerism, &8220;Community service, to me, is synonymous with community servant. The greatest man to walk the earth became a servant for all. As I strive to live as Jesus lived, believe I must become a servant.&8221;

The Rev. Rob Wynne, pastor of Cornerstone Church

and another inductee, said, &8220;Since I was a little boy I&8217;ve had an inside urge to help those that are less fortunate than me. It is not hard to find a place to volunteer.&8221;

Goodloe Sutton, editor and publisher of The Democrat Reporter, was also inducted into the Circle of Heroes. His comments about volunteerism were, &8220;I like to do little things for people I know I can do. I try to do big things like bridges and highways with all the people supporting these projects together, people can bring good changes to our county and the little differences don&8217;t matter.&8221;
