DEMOPOLIS &8212; City council members here voted to stop payment for work on the Riverwalk Project after councilman Charles Jones reported several discrepancies between the work being done and the job that was commissioned.

The vote &8212; contingent on the city attorney&8217;s approval &8212; is the culmination of months of frustration by some council members over the project.

Thomas Moore agreed that issues with the Riverwalk should be addressed, but asked the motion be amended to include a provision that the council mov forward with the city attorney&8217;s advice.

The motion passed 4-0, with Jones abstaining.

In other business, interim Police Chief Tim Williams reported four businesses were operating in the city without a license. Williams refused to release the names of the businesses. Three of those businesses have applied for a license, Williams said, and the fourth was getting its license today.

Council members also voted down a proposed &8220;stimulus package&8221; of cuts in garbage fees. The proposals &8212; to cut fees by 25 cents in perpetuity or to cut fees by $1 per month for three months &8212; was tabled indefinitely after the council considered the cost to the city.

Collins agreed.

Moore agreed.

The council also received an update on the city&8217;s dilapidated housing list from Clarence Brooker.
