Linden Mayor Pat Vice dies

LINDEN &8212; Roy Pascal &8220;Pat&8221; Vice, mayor of Linden, died Tuesday night after battling lung cancer and other complications for the last three years. He was 73 years old.

Born in Sweet Water and schooled in both Marengo and Clarke counties, Vice went to Auburn University where he played football for the Tigers. After college, Vice enlisted in Navy, where he served for 20 years.

Vice was stationed in Bainbridge, Md. but decided to move his family back to Linden, a place he had always held in high esteem, his son Chip said.

Cheryl Hall, city administrator in Linden, worked with Vice during his two most recent mayoral terms, from 2000-2004 and 2004 to the present. Vice also served as mayor from 1980-1984 and 1984-1988 and as city administrator from March 25, 1974 to June 5, 1978.

Hall said she remembered Vice for his practical joking.

But when he wasn&8217;t joking, Hall said Vice was all business, running a &8220;tight ship.&8221;

Mayor Pro-tem Alvin &8220;Butch&8221; King remembers Vice as a good friend.

King said he had many fond memories of eating dinner in Vice&8217;s caf/ each evening, something he did for many years.

One of Vice&8217;s qualities was knowing many different people from all over, including influential places like Montgomery, a quality which would lead to growth for Linden.

Vice is survived by his wife, Linda Vice, of Linden; one son, Roy Pascal &8220;Chip&8221; Vice Jr., of Prattville; daughters, Jana Vice Hoggle, of Thomaston; Sandra Vice Baugh of Dixons Mills; and Pamela Vice Samples of Linden; brother, Allen &8220;Jerry&8221; Vice, of Linden; one sister, Margie Odom, of Winn; one stepdaughter, Tammy Pettis, of Grove Hill; one stepson, Skipper Stewart, of Jackson; 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Funeral services are set for today at 10:30 a.m. at Linden Baptist Church with the Revs. Ray Bass and John Blair officiating. Interment will be at Choctaw Corner Cemetery, in Thomasville.
