During the month of July, Demopolis students from kindergarten through fifth grades had a chance to participate in an intensive art camp offered by the Community Education office which was in part paid for by funds from a 21st Century grant. The labors of the art camp, which was taught by first grade teacher at Westside Elementary Becky Holley and Demopolis High School art teacher Bill Barley, will be on display in the main hall of the Bryan W. Whitfield Memorial Hospital from July through September.

Holley said this is the seventh year she and Barley have helped with the program. She has a bachelor&8217;s degree in studio art from the University of Alabama, and the summer program allows her a chance to pass her love and knowledge of art onto the children. There is also another reason the camp ahs been such a success.

During the course the two instructors along with assistant Amanda Meadows &8212; who also teaches at Westside &8212; taught the children about acrylics, watercolor, colored pencil, charcoal and oil pastels.

Holley said that each student works on similar projects, but they are allowed to individualize each piece. These guidelines often help students express themselves without feeling anxious about the results of the project, Holley said.

There will be a total of 51 artworks on display, one for each student from the camp. The opening reception for the exhibit will be from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 13.
