LINDEN — The June 3 primary elections decided the outcome of many state races, but locally the only spot up for grabs — the district 4 county commission seat — will be determined by a run-off Tuesday between incumbent Calvin Martin and Wayne Leonard.

Martin captured 49.04 percent of the vote, while first-time candidate Wayne Leonard captured 27.63 percent. Martin needed more than 50 percent of the vote to clinch the election without a run-off.

Reached by phone earlier in the week, Martin stressed the importance of residents going out to the polls. The district is home to some of the most sparsely populated communities in the county like Dixons Mills, Surginer, Magnolia and Flatwood.

“Things have gone good,” Martin said of his campaign. “We just need everyone to get out and vote.”

Some of Martin’s priorities in another four-year term include getting water to some of the outlying areas of the district. In a previous interview Martin said he would like to see more growth and development for the communities in the south end of the county. Another project on the horizon is looking at paving County Road 36, which runs south of Thomaston, Martin said.

Leonard, who is a native of Vineland, ran for the first time this election. He works with the state ABC board on drug and alcohol and enforcement and is a former Marengo County Sheriff’s Deputy.

One of Leonard’s main goals is to push hard for more financial attention from Montgomery, specifically to go toward road improvement projects.

“I want to get more people involved with the commission,” Leonard said in a previous interview. “I want to get some of their ideas brought to the table.”
