The World Deer and Turkey Expo will be held on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in Birmingham at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex, and while this may seem to have no local connection, it does.

Capps Taxidermist, will have several mounts of turkeys, ducks and other animals on display, including their life-sized mounts, many of which are exotics.

Don and Jane Capps opened their business in 1976 and then sold their business to daughter, Dee, and her husband, Mickey Daniel.

Last year, nearly 85,000 people attended the event over the three days. The Expo has booths with every thing outdoors, from portable trout fishing ponds to clothing manufacturers.

While there are numerous mounts making their way up to Birmingham this weekend from Demopolis, the most appealing is more than likely the 10-foot tall giraffe mount, which was shot on a hunt last July by Madeline Daniels, daughter of Mickey and Dee, in Namibia.

The mount took home several awards from the Alabama Taxidermist Association’s state convention on June 26, including 1st place and Best in Category in the Masters Division for the mount. It also received 1st place and Best in Category for the habitat.

As a whole, the mount secured the People’s Choice Award, as voted on by fellow taxidermists and attendees at the event.

The World Deer and Turkey Expo opens Friday night at 5 p.m. and runs until 6 p.m. on Sunday.
