GREENSBORO — Gilford Hoyt Glover, 81, died at his home in Greensboro on July 17, 2008. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on July 19, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church with the Revs. David Pierce, Stanley Mullins of Montgomery, and John King of Evergreen officiating. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery with Kirk Funeral Homes Greensboro Chapel directing.
Glover was born in Hale County to Blanhoe Rhodes and Joseph Calhoun Glover and had spent his life in the community as a church, community and business leaders. He is a graduate of Greensboro High School in the class of 1945, and attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University), where he received a bachelor’s degree of agriculture in 1950. He was active in alumni affairs at Auburn and was an avid fan of the Auburn Tigers.
For 39 years, Glover served as an agent of Farm Bureau Insurance. He was a member of the Hale County Board of Education for a number of years. He was an organizing member of The Citizens Bank of Greensboro and was also an organizing member of the Lakeview Country Club and served in several offices of that organization.
A pillar of the First United Methodist Church up until his death, Glover was an active member of its administrative council, its Sunday school as a longtim member of the Excelsior Class, a member of the Methodist’s Men’s Club, and served in numerous other areas of worship, service, fellowship and outreach.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Joseph T. “Joe” Glover; and two sisters, Frances Glover Chapman and Frances Smith Sanford.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Carolyn Thomas Glover. He also leaves two sons and their families, Keith Glover and wife, Brenda, their children Olivia, Anne and John; Thomas Glover and his wife, Mona, and their children Courtney and Carolyn; several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Joe Glover Jr., Charles Thomas, Wallace Thomas Jr., Preston Thomas, William “Will” Sledge, Bruce Thomas, David Parker and Ervin Jay.
